چکیده

BACKGROUND Management and preservation of the soft palate is dependent on clinical stage and tumor histology. However, available literature is scarce regarding the palate preservation with the use of laser CO₂. OBJECTIVES We report the results obtained after management with laser surgery and soft palate preservation in three patients with salivary gland neoplasms. METHOD Three patients with minor salivary gland tumors were treated by means of transoral laser microsurgery. All tumors were assessed using magnetic resonance imaging. All tumors were >3 cm. Soft palate function was preserved and reconstruction was performed with primary closure. Patients began oral feeding the same day and were discharged after 24 h. CONCLUSIONS Transoral laser microsurgery is recommended for treatment of soft palate tumors. This treatment can be considered a better option when compared with other modalities such as radio- or chemoradiotherapy which require a longer time of treatment, are more expensive and tend to produce significant toxicity.

Assessment of Surgeon Judgment during Resection of Laryngeal Carcinoma

Carbon dioxide (CO2) laser surgery as a conservative tool plays a peculiar role in the management of head and neck cancer. Numerous patients who were candidates for transoral laryngeal microsurgery have forced us to eliminate frozen-section evaluation of surgical margins and use a magnified view of the larynx. The present study evaluated surgeon-judged negative margins with permanent microscopi...

Polymorphous Low-Grade Adenocarcinoma of the Tongue Base Treated by Transoral Robotic Surgery

Polymorphous low-grade adenocarcinoma is a rare malignancy arising from the minor salivary glands in the aerodigestive system, most frequently the hard palate. The treatment of choice is wide surgical resection, and the efficacy of radiotherapy has not been confirmed. A 54-year-old male presenting with a mass at the base of the tongue performed transoral laser microsurgery. The pathologic diagn...

Prognostic Value of Surgical Margins in Early-Stage Laryngeal Cancer Treated by Transoral Laser CO2 Microsurgery

Transoral Laser CO2 Microsurgery is an established mode of treatment for early glottic carcinomas. However, there are doubts in the literature with regard to histologic margin assessment following laser resection, as well as the prognostic significance of margin’s status. We assess the prognostic significance of histopathologic margins status following surgical treatment of early laryngeal canc...

Assessment of Margins in Transoral Laser and Robotic Surgery

The growing practice of endoscopic surgery has changed the therapeutic management of selected head and neck cancers. Although a negative surgical margin in resection of neoplasm is the most important surgical principle in oncologic surgery, controversies exist regarding assessment and interpretation of the status of margin resection. The aim of this review was to summarize the literature consid...
